Ali Abdullah Saleh is a Yemeni politician who was President of Yemen from 1990 to 2012. Saleh previously served as President of North Yemen from 1978 until unification with South Yemen in 1990
In July 1978, he was elected president of North Yemen after his predecessor was killed in a bomb attack the previous month. Saleh became leader of North Yemen until 1990 when he became chairman of the Presidential Council of the Republic of Yemen, which was formed after the unity of North Yemen and South Yemen. In 1999, Yemen's Saleh became the first president elected directly in the election of the first president of the united Yemen, won 96.3 percent of the vote.
After the 1999 elections, the Yemeni parliament passed a law extending the presidential term from five to seven years. On September 2006, Saleh was re-elected for a term of seven years, collecting 77.2 percent of the vote.

In early 2011, the Yemeni protesters began to launch a protest, calling for an end to Saleh's three-decade rule on February 2, 2011, Saleh announced that he would not run for a third term in 2013 and did not take their children to participate in government. He promised to reform, urging the opposition to suspend the protests and return to dialogue.

On the same day, he ordered to raise funds to employ university graduates, extend social insurance coverage, increase wages and reduce income taxes, offered to continue the political dialogue with the opposition coalition Joint Meeting Parties (JMP). Furthermore, he postpone parliamentary elections scheduled in April.

On March 10, Saleh announced new initiatives to solve the crisis, including establishing committees, members from the parliamentary and Shura councils, community leaders and youth to prepare baru.Inisiatif constitution also called for transferring the parliamentary system at the end of the year, set up power based local governance and prepare new electoral laws in preparation for forming a new government. Eight days later, Saleh declared a state of emergency and on March 20, Saleh sacked the government and ordered the prime minister and minister to stay as caretaker. On April 23, Saleh said he agreed to sign a deal brokered by the GCC where he will leave office within 30 days in return for impunity. He backed out of the deal at the last minute a day later.

On May 22, Saleh once again retreated from the signing of the GCC agreement after his party and the opposition have signed the agreement. The tribal warriors led by opposition leader Sadiq al-Ahmar launched heavy attacks on government buildings in Sanaa on the second day.

On June 3, Saleh was seriously injured in the attack on the compound in Sanaa were also severely injured 87 senior aides. He transferred power to his deputy Abdullah Rabbu Mansour Hadi and went to Saudi Arabia to seek medical treatment a day later.

On July 7, Saleh said on TV in his first speech after nine surgery for burns he suffered in an assassination attempt that claimed that he was willing to share power with the opposition.
On 12 September, he ordered his deputy , Abd - Rabbu Mansour Hadi , to hold a dialogue with the opposition to agree on a suitable mechanism to sign and implement the GCC plan .

Saleh returned to Yemen after more than three months of medical treatment in Saudi Arabia . Until in October 21 , the UN Security Council unanimously passed Resolution 2014, condemning the attacks on demonstrators pro - Saleh forces and supporting the GCC plan .
