Born from a poor family , but now he is one of the prime minister of Turkey's most successful. His father was a lifeguard . When Erdogan was 13, he and his family moved to Istanbul in order to get a better life. Erdogan then went into an Islamic school. Graduating from there, he continued his studies of business management at Istanbul Marmara University. While still active as a student, he joined the political movement that developed in the Islamic state.

In 1994, he became active in the political world by following the election of Mayor of Istanbul, the capital once the largest city in Turkey. Thanks to its ability in speech and campaign strategies, he managed to seat Mayor of Istanbul with the support of the majority of citizens of the Turkish capital.

In January 1998, Turkey's highest court shut down the party that he led and forbids its members to engage in political activities. He was later arrested because they seek to weaken the foundations of the secular state.
In 2001, Erdogan founded the Justice and Development Party. His party is then able to win a landslide victory in general elections in 2002 so as to control nearly two-thirds of parliamentary seats. However, it is still in the sentence, Erdogan could not become prime minister at the time; so Abdullah Gul, his rival, later became prime minister.

In December 2002, the Supreme Electoral Council to cancel the results of the 2001 general election because of voting irregularities allegedly occurred and a new election is scheduled on February 9, 2003. In this repeat election he was then able to surpass Abdullah Gul once again. Erdogan was later appointed prime minister.
